1410 5th Street, Berkeley

and other pictures

7, 10, 13 and 15 July 2010

Early in February I bicycled past 1410 5th Street. The building caught my eye and I stopped to look more closely. The yellow sign on the fence, near the mailbox, is a City of Berkeley Public Notice that the City is considering a building permit request by the owner of the property. I found the building attractive, and snapped a few pictures.

Earlier this month, on 10 July, I happened by the building again... and work was in progress. I stopped and spoke with the co-owner of the property and he graciously allowed me to walk around the property and also view the inside of the house. He and his partner purchased the property in November 2009 for $555,000. The house was constructed in 1895 and the exterior wood siding is clear-heart Redwood... probably logged in 1894. The house was built as a single family structure, but sometime in the past it was legally converted to a two unit building. When the house was constructed in 1895, the general area was predominantly an industrial manufacturing site. Industry is still prominent in the area but since the 1960's the area has been undergoing slow gentrification. The current owners are converting the structure back to a single family house. The most striking thing about the structure is the viewer's perception of scale. In comparsion to current building styles, the rooms have incredibly high ceilings, maybe 15 feet from the floor to the ceiling. So, although the house appears somewhat spacious from the outside, when you are in the house it is quite small with limited closet space. The redeeming feature are the very high ceilings on both upper and lower levels.
