A hike on the California Coastal Trail in southern Marin County

Gene and I did another section of the Coastal Trail. This time we did a little out-and-back hike on a section of the Coastal Trail located in southern Marin County. We started at the intersection of Bolinas-Fairfax Road and Ridgecrest Boulevard. We hiked south about 3.3 miles and then turned around and headed back to the start of the hike. The weather was beautiful, and it was a great day to hike along the edge of the NORTH AMERICAN TECTONIC PLATE and adjacent to the SAN ANDREAS EARTHQUAKE FAULT. About three hours on the trail and 980 feet of climbing.

This panoramic photo shows parts of STINSON BEACH, BOLINAS and the POINT REYES PENINSULA. This view which looks so peaceful and serene, actually shows an area which is a geologic wonder, experiencing tremendous pressure. The land that I am standing on is a TECTONIC PLATE known as the North American Plate. The land you see at sea level is part of the Pacific Plate. The Pacific Plate is slowly moving north, and that muddy area seen at low tide is know as BOLINAS LAGOON. About two miles north of Bolinas Lagoon is the point of origin when the earth ruptured at 5:16 a.m., on 18 April 1906, during the "SAN FRANCISCO EARTHQUAKE of 1906." The land mass moving north is known as the POINT REYES PENINSULA.
