Malkaoff Diggins State Historic Park is located in the northern part of California's Mother Lode country, about 25 miles northeast of Nevada City, California. This is the site of the largest and richest hydraulic gold mine in the world. Gold, worth many millions of dollars, was removed from the earth; 41 million cubic yards of earth were washed away in the gold mining efforts. What remains today is an open pit more than a mile in length and as much as 600 feet deep. A California Supreme Court decision handed down by Judge Lorenzo Sawyer on 7 January 1884, effectively shut down the gold mining operation. 11 June 2003.
