Vietnam: 5 March to 18 March 2013

I took a 2 week comprehensive tour of Vietnam traveling from Hanoi in the north, down to Can Tho in the Mekong Delta. I saw the site of the Khe Sanh Combat Base, The Rockpile, the site of the Lang Vei Special Forces Camp, the Hanoi Hilton prison, the Vinh Moc Tunnels, the site of the Chu Lai military base, the Cu Chi Tunnels, the War Remnants Museum, the former Presidential Palace plus many other interesting locations.

5 and 6 March

Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum, and the streets of Hanoi.

6 March

Hanoi Hilton prison (aka Hoa Lo or Maison Centrale) is located in Hanoi. It was built by French colonists between 1886 and 1889; it was originally used to incarcerate Vietnamese political prisoners.

7 March

We drove east from Hanoi to Ha Long, a distance of 98 miles.

7 and 8 March 

This was a special day. We cruised on Ha Long Bay, which is located within the Gulf of Tonkin, and spent the night on the ship. The next morning we visited Suprise Cave before returning to Hanoi for a flight to Da Nang.

9 March

We stayed at the Hoi An Beach Resort which is located adjacent to the South China Sea. We visited an outdoor market in Hoi An, and then traveled south to the site of the Chu Lai American military base.

10 March

This was a long and memorable day. We visited Da Nang, Marble Mountain, Hi Van Pass, Hue, the site of a bridge at Dong Ha, the former Demilitarized Zone, and the Vinh Moc Tunnel complex.

11 and 12 March

This was another memorable day. Today we saw the Rockpile, Khe Sanh Combat Base, Lang Vei Special Forces Camp, and Lao Bao, which is located on the Vietnamese/Laotian border.

13 March

This was an interesting day. We traveled east from Lao Bao via Highway 9 to Highway 14 (Ho Chi Minh Road). We then traveled south on the Ho Chi Minh Road through the A Shau Valley. At the village of A Luoi, we turned east on Highway 49, and drove to Hue.

14 March

The Citadel, which is surrounded by a moat, is located in Hue, which is the former capital of Vietnam. Within the Citadel is the former Imperial Palace.

15 March

This was a beautiful day as we cruised south 120 miles via a hi-speed boat, from Ho Chi Minh City to Can Tho. Can Tho is located in the Mekong Delta.

16 March

We viewed the Can Tho Floating Water Market, and then went back to Ho Chi Minh City via the Mekong River.

17 March

An interesting day; we saw the Cu Chi Tunnel complex, the former Presidential Palace and the War Remnants Museum.

18 March

We walked through an indoor market in Ho Chi Minh City. It was then back to Tan Son Nhut Airport for a flight to San Francisco.
